VI. POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT

India is a sovereign, secular, democratic republic with a parliamentary and federal form of government. The President is the head of state with a role in governance that is largely ceremonial. The President is elected indirectly by an electoral college for five-year terms. The Prime Minister is the de facto head of government and holds most executive powers.
